As the effects of cyber bullying are becoming a growing problem, the criminalization of cyber bullying is needed to prevent its harmful repercussions to the United States and serve as a deterrent. Cyber bullying has become the 21st century version of bullying; it has extended beyond the classroom and onto a virtual world that seems to have no real-life effects. The world is now able to bully someone in the comfort of his or her own home, at any given point, with the use of technology. However, Cyber bullying still proves to have lasting impacts on the victim and it is now time for the offender to feel the ramifications of their actions. Try to save all messages as evidence† (Hardcastle). Criminalization would give victims a method to stop the bullying. The issue is here but not acknowledged as a problem deserving of consequence. If the law enforcement agencies see that the society is focusing on the cyber bullying as a problem rather than just an issue they would act upon it in a mannerly order to put a stop to it or prevent it from occurring on a daily basis. However, by choosing to criminalize cyber bullying victims will be provided with a way to stop the bullies from harassing them. Cyber bullying laws are being created to make this destructive activity illegal. Threats are not protected speech. Thus, cyber bullying isn’t protected by the first amendment as freedom of speech. Cyber bullying deprives people of their rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. According to research in as of June 2011, thirty states have passed bullying laws where cyber bullying was included. Studies show that cyber bullying has influenced 50% of US teenagers. Schools and organizations are required to create a bullying policy including cyber bullying, as long as it is reported. Clear repercussions must be outlined. Schools require direction from the state legislatures and education departments to draft policies that will hold up in court.
