Keydy Vasquez-Cerrato Essays (744 words) - British Literature

Keydy Vasquez-Cerrato English Junior Year 17 August 2017 Growth Do you think you could survive the yellow fever? Matilda "Mattie" Cook could, and did in the bookFever 1793by Laurie Halse Anderson. First her mother got sick with the fever and sent Mattie to a farm outside of town, with her Grandfather. Soon afterwards, Matilda caught the fever and Grandfather carried her to a hospital in Bush Hill. After struggling at home for a while to find food, thieves came and Matilda defended the house with Grandfather. Soon afterwards, Grandfather passed away. The next morning Matilda looked around town and found their coffeehouse cook, Eliza, her brother, and nephews. Eventually, Eliza's nephews and a lost homeless girl, Nell, got sick and were taken to the coffeehouse. Once the frost came almost all of the sick got well so Eliza and Matilda opened up the coffeehouse together. Then, Matilda's mother returned home, tired, but alive. Matilda had grown up, metaphorically and literally, into a young adult during the course of the book. Some examples of Matilda growing up into a young adult are her surviving the fever, all of the people dead around her, and running the Cook Coffeehouse with Eliza. Surviving the yellow fever was a big experience for Matilda to go through. It really opened her eyes to the world of life and death. For example, the death cart man at Bush Hill said, "She looks dead." (97) For somebody to think you are dead is a very bad sign. Matilda must have been in really bad shape. Although to survive is a very eye opening experience. This next quote is said by Matilda's nurse in Bush Hill, Mrs. Flagg. "You've beat the Grim Reaper, you have lassie... we weren't sure you'd make it through the night," (99) Matilda was so sick that doctors didn't know if she would survive the night. Beating the Grim Reaper was an astonishing feat for anyone to do. Seeing all of this evidence made it very clear that surviving the yellow fever attributed to Matilda becoming a young adult. Another thing that helped with Matilda growing up is all of the people dead around her. One short quote, said by Matilda's mother was extremely important to the story, "Matilda, Polly's dead." (13) First, it was the start of the yellow fever epidemic of 1793. Second, Matilda knew Polly pretty well, as a servant and a friend. To lose her first must have been terrible. Another quote that supports her maturity was said by Matilda when she exclaimed, "Dead? Grandfather couldn't be dead." (147) Right when Grandfather passed away, Mattie took his death okay. Then the next morning, it seemed more real to Mattie. Lastly, much later, Matilda learned to accept all of what had happened. During the book Matilda learned to accept death of friends and family much better. In closing, all of the people dead and dying around Mattie contributed to her maturing and learning how to deal with grief. The last thing that demonstrated Mattie's growing up process is handling all of the work of running the coffeehouse. This is said by Matilda's mother about going shopping. It is, "No Matilda must stay home. I shall go." (25) This quote is important to the story because it shows that at the beginning of the book, Matilda was not even allowed to go shopping for the coffeehouse, much less run it. She wasn't nearly as respected as she became. My second quote was from the end of the book, when Matilda was running the coffeehouse. The quote is thought by her, here it is, "Free samples were proving to be a clever way to get customers to eat more." (228) Once she started running the coffeehouse, Mattie learned all of the tips and tricks to getting more money. She really became the owner after that. After the struggle of getting it up and running, owning the coffeehouse really helped the metamorphosis Matilda went through. So, after all of this information it is obvious that Mattie has gone through a metamorphosis into a young adult. From her surviving the yellow fever at Bush Hill. To coping with death better after all of the losses of lives. To ru nning

Free Essays on Acquaintance Rape

The last time I had to debate an issue, it was on the subject of â€Å"Acquaintance Rape.† My goal was to inform my audience that rape is most often committed, least reported, and least prosecuted serious crime in the United States. I also wanted to convey the fact that rape is an act of violence using sex as a weapon. It is also an attempt to control and dominate the other’s physical and emotional safety. Thus, it is not about simply letting ones sexual passions get out of control or is it about how a person looks. Date rape is defined as nonconsensual sex between people who have a social or dating relationship. This term was created to make people aware that rape is not only when a stranger attacks, but it can happen between two people who know each other. This type of attacker may be a friend, associate, classmate, neighbor or relative. In order to achieve the goal of informing my audience as to the serious of this topic, I researched the issue and presented som e alarming statistics. I feel that this argument was somewhat typical of my argument style, however I had to keep in mind the sensitivity of the subject matter. In light of this fact, my approach needed to be a little less adversarial. Typically, I would have been a little more competitive and confrontational. However, I decided to take the consensual approach in some areas such as trying to be both logical and emotional. I feel that in this particular instance that gender and life experience has influenced my argument style. As a survivor of sexual abuse, I understand the confusion one experiences about whether or not he or she has consented to a sexual act. I also understand that in some instances the perpetrator often feels that he is â€Å"entitled† to sex. Both attitudes are incorrect. Unless sex is fully consensual for both parties, it can be classified as rape. Nothing ever gives you the right to force sex. It does not make you cool, powerful, sm... Assignment 2 Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

2 - Assignment Example The cash flow from the operations proposed to be outsourced is analyzed to work out the net present value for evaluating the outsourcing decision of the company under various scenarios. Hypothesis Cost savings is an important determinant in the risk reward analysis of an outsourcing decision taken by a company. However, there are also other considerations involved such as tax implications, stringent statutory regulations and the conditions in the labor market. Labor productivity Since the decision proposed to be taken is mainly on the basis outsourcing labor involved in the operations, productivity of the labor need to be analyzed for comparison. Though currently the labor productivity in India is less compared to US, the company is hopeful of increase in productivity over a period of time due to training and experience as reflected in Scenario 2. Labor productivity Number of service calls per day : 600 Total number of calls during the year : 600 x 365 = 219000 Number of customers se rved in US/Hour : 10 Number of customers served in India/Hour : 6 Number of hours in US required/year : 219000 / 10 = 21900 Number of hours in India required/year : 219000 / 6 = 36500 Labor Cost The company aims at reducing the cost of providing service to the customers for maximizing its profits. Since the important determinant factor is cheap labor available in India which works out to just 20% of the wages prevailing in US, the overall cost of labor comes down in outsourcing. Estimated labor cost in US : 21900 x 10 = $219000 Estimated labor cost in India : 36500 x 2 = $73000 Investment in outsourcing The company estimates that all other costs associated with outsourcing customer service have a present value of $2 million. The annual rate of interest is considered at 5% for working out the net present value of the cash out flows over the expected future life of the business of 20 years under Scenario 1 and at 3% under Scenario 2 for 30 years. The net present values relating to ope rations in US and outsourcing to India under the two scenarios are given below. Operations in US Outsourcing to India Scenario 1 (20 years & Interest @ 5%) 2,729,224 2,909,741 Scenario 2 (30 years & Interest @ 3%) 4,292,497 4,126,214 It could be observed that under Scenarios 1, outsourcing appears to be not attractive. However, under Scenario 2 outsourcing to India is beneficial. The parameters adopted under Scenario 2 are applied for 20 years time horizon for the purpose of comparison (Scenario 3) as below. Scenario 3 (20 years & Interest @ 3%) 3,258,167 3,417,476 Outsourcing is not attractive under Scenario 3. In the case of Scenario 2, the reduction in cost through outsourcing is negligible considering the longer time horizon. The changes in Scenario 2 compared to Scenario 1 are analyzed to understand their impact on the outsourcing decision. Also, the recommendations are given after careful evaluation of the impact of the various important determinants involved in outsourcing de cision. Recommendations Outsourcing under Scenario 1 does not result in cost savings in view of the initial investment outlay required to be made. The changes introduced under Scenario 2 also do not make the outsourcing decision attractive. Therefore, based on a careful analysis from different perspectives, outsourcing is not recommended due to the reasons given. However, outsourcing under S

Opera - Carmen Essay Example for Free

Opera Carmen Essay This was an amazing Opera, I only wish that I had the opportunity to see it in person. I have never watched anything like it, and probably would not have had it not been part of this class. Let me say Thank you for opening my eyes to this amazing experience. The theatrical performance, choreography and music were very moving and to my surprise drew me in to continue watching and trying to interpret. I have to say I was very shocked at the sexuality used in this performance, it seemed as thought it was wrote long before its time. Carmens sexuality was very much a large part of the performance and I found it intriguing. I decided to rent the movie Carmen to compare the performances and found them to be very similar in character however the Opera was much more captivating. The music alone is wonderful but when added to the stage performance it was absolutely mesmerizing. Carmen is a direct conflict of the expectations for women of this time period. Women were to be gentle, biddable and sinned against. However Carmen used her beauty and sexuality to her advantage. She perfectly combined her acting, singing, and dancing abilities to portray a seductive and enticing personality that even Don Jose could not resist. The musical transitions for each character and scene were for me the amateur at times overwhelming and difficult to take it all in. As the music and people become loud during the bullfight in the background you can hear Carmen and Don Jose characters in the music. In the beginning of the Opera Don Jose appears to be very strong and powerful with an ability to ignore Carmen. Again the music helps portray this image. Obviously he changes throughout the performance to become ravaged with lust and jealousy towards Carmen. You can hear in his voice his defeat and it leaves you to believe that although he will no longer be jealous he also will mourn Carmen forever. Although the orchestra was not shown often it appeared that it consisted primarily of men, which I found rather interesting. The sets were also incredible which made me wonder how the original sets were designed. This Opera appears to have been a monumental changes in the French Opera it is a shame that Bizet, due to his early death, was unable to realize his impact not only of his time but still today 100 years later.

Software Piracy in India and the Developed World :: Software Computers Technology Essays

Software Piracy in India and the Developed World Introduction: Software Piracy in India Software is one of the easiest and a very lucrative medium to steal. The copies made are as good as the original software and can be made quickly in large quantities. This makes it very difficult to effectively enforce anti-piracy laws, as the officials cannot raid each and every home in search of illegal copies of copyrighted software. In India, with a population of over 1 billion, effective enforcement of anti-piracy laws is a ponderous task. The government of India possesses neither the will nor the finances to dedicate a chunk of its budget to enforcing copyright infringement laws. Another problem is that to control expenditure of monitoring and convicting such a huge number of offenders is a complicated and time consuming process. Latest figures show that the Personal Computer market in India is rocketing skywards. In the quarter ending December 31st, 2003, 800,000 units were sold. Out of these 55 percent of the computer sales were of regional brands and unbranded systems. It should be noted that not all of these brands conform to software copyright laws as in the United States and Europe, or even in India. By the end of March 2004, an estimated 3 million personal computers are expected to sell. 2 The regional brands are the most responsible for propagating software piracy. In order to sell the computers cheap, pirated versions of software are installed on all machines sold. It can easily be deduced how much loss software piracy will cause the industry in the recent future. The use of illegal or copied versions of software costs the worldwide software industry more than 13 Billion Dollars a year in revenues, out of which 1.96 billion dollars are lost in the US alone, which has a software piracy rate of 23 percent. In some East-Asian, Latin American and European countries, 95 percent of the software used is pirated. So, India is better off but still has a long way to go in the fight against software piracy. India is unarguably one of the software hubs of the world, yet software piracy is rampant in this country. The software piracy rate in India is nearly 65 percent. No illegal activity of this scale can survive unless and until it has the support or involvement of a large number of users. The more concrete manner in which software piracy can be precluded is to pro-actively involve the public in the anti-piracy initiative.
